I care about the environment. I really do. But sometimes, I find that being a blogger goes against my efforts to be kind to the earth. Take, for example, the dozens of packages I get on a daily basis, So much paper. So much plastic. So much waste. On the plus side, companies are getting better with their PR packages. A couple of years ago, it was all about creating the biggest, most elaborate displays to send out to bloggers in hopes of getting as much media attention as possible. But now, that’s reversing and companies are going back to packaging their products in more simple boxes to reduce waste. Thank goodness. (I’d highly recommend watching Samantha Ravndahl’s video, “NO MORE PR” for a bigger blogger’s perspective on this).
So to offset the amount of waste I do dispose of, I’m always on the hunt for other ways to save the environment! One little thing that is super easy for anyone to invest in are reusable cotton pads. I used to use TWO, sometimes THREE, cotton pads every single day to remove my makeup (and that’s not even counting the ones I use for applying my toner!). Over the course of the year, that’s 700-1000 cotton pads going in the trash. That’s an insane amount of waste. And then when you think of people all over the world using that same amount of cotton pads?! That’s crazy.
I can’t believe the idea of reusable cotton pads didn’t hit me until I got sent a set from Freon Collective. They’re so simple, yet such a genius concept. These cotton rounds are made from 100% organic cotton so they’re super soft as well as ultra-absorbent. Plus, they’re really cute with many different designs and patterns you can pick from! Mine are the Tropical print (which are currently sold out if I’m not mistaken) that is decorated with splashes of pink and purple and blue leaves. Super pretty (and not to mention, way better than the boring white disposable cotton pads).
One thing that I really like about Freon Collective is their attention to detail. These are just pieces of fabric cut into a circle and given the title of a reusable cotton pad. In addition to being 100% organic cotton (as mentioned before), they come in a little drawstring mesh bag that is the perfect thing for throwing in your washing machine with your usual laundry load so you don’t lose any of the little pads! You can then lay flat to dry and they’re ready to be reused! Genius? I think so.
And while we’re on the topic of reusable items in the beauty world, we also have to discuss my reusable makeup wipes. I view makeup wipes as the same evil as cotton pads. When you’re using one or two every single day, those really add up in the landfill. I got these microfiber cloths from Homsense (but Sephora also has a bunch of similar ones) that remove your makeup with just warm water! No makeup remover needed! And best of all, I’ve had these same four cloths for over two years now and they’re still going strong. That’s a lot of makeup wipes I’ve saved from going in the trash!
