Is tea tree oil better for your acne than salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide?

I have been talking non-stop about skincare on ze blog lately but I ain’t mad about it. And that’s not going to stop anytime soon. There’s just so much skincare to try and so little time. Thursday Plantation is a brand that I had never heard of before. It’s an Australian brand that contains no synthetic parabens, petroleum, mineral oils, silicones, SLS/SLES, alcohol, phthalates, artificial colours or fragrances as well as being non-comedogenic. If you would have told me this a couple years ago, I probably would have shrugged my shoulders and carried on using whatever skincare brand is trendy on Instagram at the moment. But as I’ve gotten older, using natural ingredients that are good for my skin is something I prioritize over pretty packaging and hyped up products. And so you best believe I was excited to try Thursday Plantation when I saw their ingredients are 100% naturally derived.

Thursday Plantation has a vast range of skincare products all contain tea tree but I was sent their line for acne prone skin in particular. I have been talking about acne and blemish-fighting products so much on ze blog lately but I’ve been really determined to clear up my skin for once and for all. I’m 24 now, when is the acne going to stop?! Tea tree is surprisingly one thing that I’ve never really tried for my acne despite everyone’s claims that it helps their skin so much. So, I finally stopped being stubborn and gave the tea tree line from Thursday Plantation a try.

So the acne line consists of a Tea Tree Face Wash Foam ($14.99CAD), Tea Tree & Witch Hazel Toner ($12.99CAD), Tea Tree Medicated Gel ($10.99CAD) and Tea Tree Face Wipes ($12.99CAD). Oh and yes, that’s right. The line is extremely affordable. Thursday Plantation is killing the skincare game. I really like the foam face wash which is something I never thought I would say. Usually I hate foams. I find they aren’t thick enough to remove all my makeup and make my skin feel clean. But this foam is quite a thick foam (more like the texture of a shaving foam rather than a foaming hand wash) so it feels like I’m really cleansing my skin without stripping it of all it’s oils. The toner has not only tea tree but also witch hazel which is also amazing for acne prone skin. Witch hazel is a natural astringent that tightens pores and improves skin texture. The last product in the routine is a Medicated Gel that I use as a spot treatment. It contains 20% Tea Tree Oil and 0.5% Camphor (great for relieving irritation and itching). Although I don’t find this gel as effective as my benzoyl peroxide spot treatment, it is a great alternative to someone who doesn’t want a harsh topical gel. It doesn’t excessively dry out the skin and the tea tree is effective at stopping any inflammation and killing bacteria.

But the real winner of the Tea Tree acne line from Thursday Plantation are these Tea Tree Face Wipes. This pack contains 25 biodegradable (thank God, makeup wipes are usually horrible for the planet) wipes that contain soothing copaiba oil and aloe vera as well as tea tree oil. Now, I can’t even remember the last time I used makeup wipes. I usually HATE them. They never seem to be moist enough, they irritate my skin and they’re extremely wasteful and pricey for what they are. I much prefer a micellar water and reusable cotton pad combo. But these Tea Tree Face Wipes are making me a fan of makeup wipes after all. They are the perfect level of moistness while adequately removing my makeup and leaving my skin feeling soft and cleansed. Just don’t use these on your eyes, it’s a stinging disaster if you do. But the reason I love these wipes so much is the extent of how my skin has cleared up. Now, it could be a number of factors why my acne is suddenly controllable (I’m eating healthy, I’m drinking more water, I’m getting more sleep AKA I’m finally getting my act together as an adult) but I’m convinced it’s these wipes.

So how exactly is tea tree so good for your skin and acne? Lemme tell ya. Listen up. This 100% pure Australian tea tree oil is a natural antibacterial ingredient that removes excess oil and bacteria from the skin. Because it’s antibacterial, it’s going to kill any of the pimple-producing bacteria in your skin. The entire Thursday Plantation range works together to remove excess oil/sebum, dirt, and make-up without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Therefore, you don’t get any of the nasty drying and other side effects that you might experience if you were using a harsher acne system like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.
