There’s one thing I have come to look forward to every Summer and that is SONiC Field Day. SONiC Field Day is a music festival put on by an Edmonton radio station, SONiC 102.9. SONiC has been one of my favorite radio station for years now so of course, the festival is always one of my favorites as well. Alternative Rock and Indie music will always have a special place in my heart.
So, I attended SONiC Field Day last year (see post here) with a media pass and it was one of the most amazing times of my life. I got to see some of my favorite bands live like The Glorious Sons, Arkells, Cold War Kids and Jimmy Eat World. And so, when SONiC Field Day came around this year again, I knew it was going to be an amazing time. And maybe even more amazing because it was two days instead of just the one day like last year.
Once again the lineup was absolute perfection with headliners, The Glorious Sons and July Talk. Other performances included Grandson, The Treble, Said The Whale, The Beaches, Sam Roberts Band and Pup. Yup, I know, the lineup was that good. But what I found especially amazing was watching these bands grow within the span of just a year. At last year’s SONiC Field Day, I also had the pleasure of getting to see Grandson and The Glorious Sons. But there was one big difference. The fan base. Last year, Grandson performed earlier in the day and although his performance was absolutely amazing, he definitely didn’t have the amount of people watching him that he deserved. And yet, this year, when he ran out on stage, screaming “Who the FUCK knows who I am”, the crowd went absolutely wild. He put on such an insane performance and I think that’s so special to see. In just a year, he’s gone from having a small, humble fan base to people absolutely losing their mind over him. I’m so glad he’s starting to get the recognition and praise he deserves because man oh man, Grandson has serious talent.
Who the FUCK knows who I am?

Another band that I noticed the same thing with was The Glorious Sons. Now, I’ve always been a huge fan of them. I might even say that they were the band I was most excited to see at SONiC Field Day last year. But once again, the crowd was not as hyped during their performance as they were closer to the end of the night with Jimmy Eat World and the Arkells. But this year’s SONiC Field Day was a whole other story. The Glorious Sons headlined this year’s festival and I couldn’t be more proud of them. I can’t even begin to tell you how many people I saw walking around wearing their merch. Seriously, every second person was wearing a Glorious Sons t-shirt. And when they played at the end of the night, there wasn’t a single person not dancing and singing along.
Throughout this past year and at SONiC Field Day, I’ve really enjoyed watching all of my favorite bands grow and expand their fan base. I’m not one of the people who want my favorite bands to stay underground. The more people that listen to them, the happier I am. And I hope that next year at SONiC Field Day in 2020, I can see even more of my favorite bands achieve their wildest dreams and headline a music festival. The Beaches, I got my eye on you.
And so, to finish up this post, here are some of my favorite songs that I got to experience live that day and ones that you should definitely check out if you haven’t heard them already! Let me know which are your favorites in the comments down below!
