YSL Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-in-Stick Lipstick review

There are very few lipsticks that I will do a whole dedicated review for. Usually there isn’t much I can say about a lipstick. Because after all, what is there to say? Sure, you can describe the shade in as much detail as you can muster and talk about if it’s pigmented enough but that’s often it. But, in my humble opinion, YSL lipsticks always deserve their own blog post. They are just that good.

This is my third Saint Laurent lipstick (check out my other two reviews here and here) and I bought it at the height of my quarantine online shopping addiction. They were offering free shipping, free engraving, and five free samples. Y’all know how much I love the word free. And since this is the collector’s edition lipstick for the winter season, it was 30% off. How can someone pass up that deal? Maybe if you have excellent self control but that’s just not me.

This is the Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-in-Stick Lipstick ($49CAD/ $38USD) from YSL and it’s simply perfection in a lipstick. I have last year’s collector’s edition lipstick in a bright coral shade (review here) and still to this day it’s one of my most worn lipsticks, so I knew I needed to snag this year’s LE lipstick as well. This is the shade #49 Rose Saint Germain. It looked so much darker on the website (that’s the trouble when buying lipsticks online), but I was delighted when it arrived in the mail and it was the most perfect bright, blue-toned pink. Temptalia describes it as a moderately cool-toned, medium-dark fuchsia with a natural finish which I would say is a pretty accurate description and a much better attempt at the shade interpretation than mine. And don’t you worry if you’re seeing that this lipstick is indeed sold out online, the shade is a permanent colour in the collection even if the beautiful limited edition star package is not. Thank goodness!

So, let’s also talk about the formula and why exactly YSL lipsticks are so great. The Rouge Volupté Shine Lipsticks contain hyaluronic acid to seal in moisture and prevent lips from drying out while it’s antioxidant shield of pomegranate and rice help to combat free radicals. Candelilla wax and silicon oils coat the lips in a shiny film to really enhance the color and give that perfect wet-looking shine that somehow doesn’t smudge and stays on your lips for the better part of the day (unless you eat or drink something, then it’s game over). These are truly the only lipsticks I want to wear anymore, especially since we’re in the middle of a pandemic and a matte lipstick just seems like more trouble than it’s worth if nobody is going to see it underneath your mask.

Oh, and I probably should mention that I took advantage of YSL’s free engraving services and engraved When I’m Older on my lipstick. How cute is that?
