I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that TikTok has completely taken over my life. It is truly the best app to ever grace this earth and I honestly don’t know what my life consisted of before I started my nightly ritual of watching hours and hours of TikTok before I go to sleep. But, you know, TikTok isn’t just a bunch of mindless, pointless videos. Oh no. They’re beneficial and educational. The other day my boyfriend asked me what the best thing I learned from TikTok was. I couldn’t answer him right away because the list of what I’ve learned is endless. But, after a lot of debate, I’ve finally found my answer. The best thing I learned from TikTok is truly what the best mascara is.

A couple of months ago, when Maybelline launched this mascara, it quickly became known as the ‘TikTok mascara’ after a few videos went viral on the app showing how long this mascara made people’s lashes. These videos were insane. They showed girls’ lashes going from non-existent to looking straight up like falsies. It was magical. I have never been one to gravitate towards drugstore mascaras (I’m quite the mascara snob) but how could anyone resist trying this mascara after seeing the success other people have had with it? So, for those of you living under a rock or those of you that aren’t glued to TikTok for 20 hours a day (basically the same thing), this is the Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara ($13.99CAD/$11.49USD) in Blackest Black (what is the difference between that and Very Black? I will never know) and I needed to put it to the test to see if it would live up to all the TikTok hype.

I was so excited to try out this mascara. Usually, when I’m reviewing a makeup item for ze blog, I will photograph it before I go to use it. But I was so damn pumped to see how this mascara would perform that I just skipped straight to trying it out and figured I would just take photos of it later (so please excuse the mascara residue on the packaging). My first impressions was that it’s a drier formula. I love a wet mascara that slowly dries up over the couple of months of use, but this was definitely on the drier side right off the bat. However, it performed incredibly well. It’s a pretty standard silicone, spiky brush but it has a little bit of flexibility and bend where the brush connects to the wand so it allows you to really wiggle it through your lashes to fully coat them.

It’s marketed as a long lasting mascara that delivers full volume and limitless length. I would have to agree with the statement that it’s long lasting. This is the non-waterproof formula (I only wear non-waterproof) and I find that it doesn’t smudge or flake throughout the day. It just stays put on my lashes all day. I’m pretty pleased with just that on it’s own. As for the limitless length, it does add quite a bit of length to my lashes. I already have really long lashes so this mascara didn’t wow me like some of the lash transformations that I saw on TikTok but it added a decent amount of length. I would say it’s on par to the Benefit Roller Lash Mascara ($25USD/$33CAD) (review here), one of my other holy grail mascaras. And as for full volume, I would say this mascara is lacking a little bit in that department. It’s definitely more of a lengthening mascara than a volumizing one. It adds definition and separation and length but not a whole ton of volume. But that’s fine by me. I always prefer a lengthening mascara over a volumizing one.

Now I know I’m not absolutely raving about this mascara right now but I do have to say that for the price, it’s a really damn good mascara and I do highly recommend it. It’s on the same level as a lot of the higher end mascaras that I have tried in my lifetime, so I’m pretty happy that I now have a drugstore option to consider when I don’t feel like spending upwards of $30 on a single mascara. Oh! And I almost forgot to mention if it clumps or not. I found this mascara did a very good job at separating the lashes and ensuring there were no clumps. And it doesn’t create that ugly spidery lash effect that I despise. So all in all, it’s a great mascara! Thank you TikTok, thank you.
