I figured there’s no better way to come back after a month long blogging hiatus (sorry about that by the way!) than with a makeup review that absolutely tears the product apart. Oops, was that too much of a spoiler for you? I guess that was a pretty blunt way to start off a blog post. But, the cats out of the bag now, I guess. This Gucci bronzer is overpriced and it quite simply sucks. Wait no. I take that back. It doesn’t suck. I just really don’t see the appeal of an $84 bronzer, especially when it really doesn’t perform like an $84 bronzer should.
Okay, so let’s discuss. This is the Gucci Poudre De Beauté Éclat Soleil Bronzing Powder ($84CAD/$62USD). Why do fancy makeup brands insist on combining both french and english words when naming their products? I get that it adds to the bouginess and prestige of the product but c’mon. It’s really not all that necessary. Am I in an especially negative mood today? It does appear that way. Anyways, this Gucci Bronzing Powder comes in five different shades (Fair, Light, Medium, Tan, and Dark) which I do really appreciate. The Fair colour is the perfect shade for my pale skin, I will give it that. It’s not too dark, it’s not too light. But that’s really where the positives stop.
Actually, that’s a lie (wow I’m really all over the place with this review today). The packaging is stunning. the turquoise and gold compact couldn’t be more luxurious or prettier. I can confidently say that this is one of the best looking makeup items I have in my collection. And it’s functional. The bronzing powder pan lifts up to reveal the most gorgeous matching turquoise bronzing brush. Have I ever used this brush? No. Will I be forced to use it if I ever travel with this and forget a bronzing brush? Maybe. I will let you know. So yes, the packaging is beautiful and helps slightly towards justifying that extreme price tag.
But let’s talk about the bronzer itself now. It’s described as a bronzer that is designed to deliver a luminous finish and a natural glow with a soft and silky texture that is creamy to the touch. Huh, sounds appealing right? WRONG. I honestly would think they were describing a different product than what I’m currently holding if I didn’t know any better because that description really doesn’t match up with my experience of using this bronzer. This bronzer is dry. It’s not soft, it’s not silky, it’s not creamy. It’s just dry. Actually, I take that back (see, I told you this review is really all over the place). It’s slightly silky and smooth. But as for a glow or luminous finish? I really can’t see any of that. It’s definitely more of a matte, flat finish. However, if you’re opposed to any shimmer or need something more matte, you might really like this bronzer. Just maybe not for $84. And it’s patchy, really patchy. Even though it appears easy to blend out, I feel like whenever I look in a mirror throughout the day, I feel like the bronzer looks like it’s just sitting on top of my skin instead of being flawlessly blended into my makeup.
I’m aware that I’m coming across as really fixated on price in this review. But the truth is, why would you pay extra for something just because it’s Gucci? Wouldn’t you want to buy a bronzer that works even better than this one for half the price? Call me crazy, but that’s my thought process whenever I buy makeup. However, I will say, if you’re looking to buy more of a “designer” bronzer, the Chanel Bronzing Cream (review here) is much more worth the high price tag. Sorry Gucci!
