I’m honestly shocked Dyson didn’t come out with haircare sooner. I mean, they launched their Supersonic hair dryer almost eight years ago now, so I’m assuming this haircare has been several years in the making. But nonetheless, like any new Dyson launch, I was super excited to get my hands on it and try it immediately. And spoiler alert: it didn’t disappoint.
I wanted to hate this haircare duo. I really did. I wanted to hate it so much that I would return it to Sephora and my wallet would be $140 richer. But, that just wasn’t the case. Dyson released both a pre-style cream and a post-style serum. No shampoo, no conditioner, no heat protectant, nothing else in the line… yet. A strategic move on their part? I’m not too sure. I would have loved a comprehensive hair care line right away from them but I assume that is still to come. I have no doubt in my mind that they won’t just stop at two haircare products and call it a day. But anyways, back to the actual products.
This Dyson hair styling range is different from anything else on the market and part of the reason I was so excited to get my hands on it. Both products feature an ingredient called chitosan. It’s a macromolecule derived from oyster mushrooms. It’s found in their cell walls and is responsible for giving it their support and shape. But it’s not just the ingredient in these products that’s unique, it’s what it does. The chitosan molecule has immense natural strength so it’s able to help give hair a flexible hold. Now, when you think of hold, I’m sure you think of gels, mousses, and sticky styling creams. But, my hair is so fine and light that any of those glue-like products can make it feel so crunchy and weighed down. So, that’s where the magic of these Dyson products come in. Dyson’s technology, with the help of chitosan, helps to flexible lock in styles, strand by strand (instead of gluing strands to one another) with a lightweight structure of bonds. And I know what you’re thinking- wow, that sounds like just a bunch of buzzwords to make me buy yet another expensive Dyson product. But, I’m not lying when I say I’ve noticed such a difference with these two products. My curls last so nicely when used in conjunction with the Dyson Airwrap. I don’t even have to touch them up the next day. And my hair stays nice and fluffy and shiny.
Now, let’s talk about the actual products. The Dyson Chitosan Pre-Style Cream ($69.99CAD) is available in four different formulations: 1) straight to wavy light conditioning, 2) curly to coily light conditioning, 3) straight to wavy rich conditioning, and finally, 4) curly to coily rich conditioning. I, of course, got the straight to wavy light conditioning as I have fine hair with a bit of wave that is easily weighed down by heavy products. I really love that this isn’t a “one size fits all” kind of hair product. The four different formulations are definitely much needed. To use, all I do is run two pumps through my hair, focusing on the ends, while it’s still damp. It helps to provide flexible, all-day hold while getting rid of unwanted frizz and providing shine. The only thing it doesn’t provide is heat protection, which is quite surprising considering these are designed to be used alongside Dyson’s heat styling tools. Dyson, please explain yourselves.
Dyson’s other product, the Chitosan Post-Style Serum ($69.99CAD) is designed to hold and hydrate your end style. It only comes in one formulation (suitable for all hair types), but like the Pre-Style Cream, it provides all-day hold while eliminating frizz. In addition, it also adds instant shine, hydration, and definition thanks to it’s hyaluronic acid and amino acid blend. I love working this through my curls to help separate and loosen them. It just makes my hair look so bouncy and shiny. We love!!
Now, before I end off this blog post, we have to talk about the packing because I’m obsessed. The cartridge is encased in a luxurious tube that is refillable (save $5 when you just buy the refill) with a magnetic cap. To dispense the product, all you need to do is pump the tube against the palm of your hand and the perfect amount comes out. I always do two pumps of the pre-style cream and two pumps of the post-style serum and I never feel like I’m wasting any. I just love smart packaging. And, if you’re hesitant to shell out the cash on the full sizes, Dyson does also offer 15ml trial sizes for $24.99 which is a nice way to try it out to see if you love it. But, I have a feeling you will.
