I have been using the Benefit Gimme Brow+ Tinted Eyebrow Gel ($35CAD/$26USD) for as long as I can remember and have stuck by its side through multiple formula changes and packaging revamps (see one of my first reviews on it here). It’s truly an oldie, but a goodie. And that’s because it’s not just a tinted brow gel. Instead, it’s a volumizing tinted brow gel. It contains tiny microfibers within the gel that adhere to both your skin and existing brow hairs to create not only darker and more defined brows, but also fuller looking brows with volume.
But that’s not all. The Benefit Gimme Brow+ Gel also features a really nice small, tapered wand to precisely apply the gel where you want it. And, the formula is extremely water resistant and long wearing. I’ve never found this gel to fade or smudge throughout the day. My only issue with it (and it’s a small one at that) is that it doesn’t have the strongest hold on the brow hairs. It’s definitely a more flexible gel rather than one that’s going to get really crispy and crunchy and not let your brow hairs move one bit. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing just comes down to personal preference and how much hold your brows need! But, that leads us to our next problem. As much as I love this brow gel, I’ve just been noticing lately I go through it way too fast. And with a price tag of $35 for only 3 grams of product, I figure it’s just not the most financially smart purchase I could be making.
And so, when the Sephora VIB sale rolled around last month, I went looking for a new brow gel that could potentially compete with the Benefit Gimme Brow+ Gel. After reading a lot of reviews and comparing prices to volume, I finally decided to try out the Glossier Boy Brow ($27CAD/$19USD). Like the Benefit Gimme Brow+ Gel, this has been a long-time holy grail brow gel in the beauty community and I’m honestly shocked I’m just getting around to trying it now. This one is $27 for 3.8 grams (still overpriced in my opinion), so it’s a little better priced than it’s Benefit counterpart. And I find that I don’t use as much product daily so here’s hoping it will last me a bit longer!
The Glossier Boy Brow is slightly different than the Benefit Gimme Brow+ Gel in a couple of other ways. It is also a volumizing gel but instead of containing little fibers that attach to your brows, it contains collagen to condition your existing brow hairs and help them grow to naturally thicken them over time! It also contains oleic acid (derived from olive oil) to nourish and moisturize the brow hairs. I find that this gel is also more of a pomade texture because of the beeswax and carnauba wax in the formula so it works really well at holding the brow hairs in place without making them feel too stiff or crunchy.
So, which brow gel do I like better? Honestly, they’re both great and if one was a significant amount cheaper, that’s the one I would go with. I guess now it just comes down to personal preference and shade selection. For reference, I am usually a shade 1 or shade 2 in the Benefit Gimme Brow+ Gel depending on how dark I want my brows and shade blonde in the Glossier Boy Brow. They’re both fantastic and a staple in my makeup routine. You can’t go wrong with either one.
