I’ve talked about CertClean’s Clean Beauty Awards a couple of times in the past on ze blog (see here and here) as I’ve been lucky enough to be a judge! However, this year, I also got to judge the final round: the best of the best. The awards are concentrated on different categories of products that comply with the CertClean standards. CertClean is North America’s leading certification for safer skincare. It isn’t about how organic or natural a product is, but how it is doesn’t contain 1400+ harmful chemicals. As a bit of a refresher, all of the products that I will be talking about today are free from:
- 1. BHA and BHT
- 2. Coal Tar Dyes
- 3. DEA-related ingredients
- 4. Dibutyl phthalate
- 5. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
- 6. Parabens
- 7. Parfum (also known as Fragrance)
- 8. PEG compounds
- 9. Petrolatum
- 10. Siloxanes
- 11. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS)
- 12. Triclosan
For this final round, I got to judge the best of the best odour care (AKA deodorants). I was super excited to find out that I would be judging this category because, without a doubt, everyone should be using a clean, natural deodorant with no chemicals. However, not all natural deodorants are the same and there are definitely some that help keep you stink-free better than others. So without further ado, here are my thoughts on the following deodorants!
Routine Sexy Sadie, Super Star & Moon Sisters ($30CAD each)
Routine deodorants are actually the very first natural deodorant I ever tried. I met the founders a couple years ago at a university business conference and I’m so excited to see how much they’ve grown over the years! They’ve also greatly changed their product offering since I did my last review (see here) so I was excited to give them another try! They now have baking soda-free versions and vegan (beeswax-free) formulas as well as their original natural deodorants. The Sexy Sadie formula has a scent of ylang ylang, vanilla & cinnamon which is absolutely heavenly. Super Star smells like a mix of tonka, cardamom, sage & pepper but also has charcoal to detoxify, magnesium to relax the pits and reduce stress sweats and prebiotics to keep your skin healthy. Moon Sisters also has that charcoal, magnesium and prebiotics and smells like neroli & roses!
Nala Lemon Myrtle & Geranium Deodorant ($29CAD)
Okay I am just going to tell you straight up that this is my favorite out of all the deodorants that I am going to be talking about today. First, the packaging and the whole aesthetic in general is perfection. Second, the scent of lemons and roses is feminine yet fresh. And third, I just love the company, Nala, in general. They have so many different varieties with even an option to make a custom deodorant where you can choose the strength, scent and custom packaging! Amazing!
Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant Paste & Barrier Booster ($18.50AUD)
I got to try out both the Black Chicken Remedies Axilla Original formula for all skin types and the Barrier Booster version for sensitive skin. And although I did like these deodorants, I have to be honest. I hate deodorants that come in jars or tubs. They are just too messy and difficult to apply and I find I don’t get an even coating when spreading it on with my fingers. However, these both smell amazing and work great! The original smells like a spicy musk where as the Barrier Booster has a fresh citrus scent but also comes in a variety of other scents!
Organic Ever Kind Ultra Deodorant ($18USD)
Ever Kind is a company based out of New Zealand and sells their deodorants both in glass jar versions and stick versions. However, their stick version isn’t a normal stick. The tube is both eco-friendly and compostable so there is no wasted packaging with this lil’ guy. The Ultra version is ultra effective and ultra gentle and smells like manuka, lavender and geranium rose.
Glowing Orchid Organics Grapefruit & Bergamot Natural Deodorant ($18.99USD)
The Glowing Orchid Natural Deodorant is also in a paper tube that is zero-waste. You just push on the bottom of the tube to dispense the product, easy peasy, lemon squeezy. Speaking of lemons, the scent of this one is divine as well. It’s fruity and citrusy with the grapefruit and bergamot organic and fair trade essential oils. I know I’m talking about scents a lot in this post with each product but that’s honestly one of my main deciding factors when picking out a new deodorant!
SoulDeo Vanilla & Coconut Natural Deodorant ($18CAD)
This is by far the best smelling deodorant of this whole post. I am such a sucker for vanilla and coconut scents and this one is no exception. It really is summer in a tube. It’s also magnesium enriched with activated charcoal to draw out toxins in the body, is gentle on skin and naturally neutralizes odor and doesn’t leave any staining or residue behind! And if you fall in love with the deodorant, SoulDeo also carries oil shower mists and dry shampoos in the same irresistible scents.
Cleo+Coco Lavender Vanilla Charcoal Deodorant ($18USD)
Cleo+Coco deodorants are great for those who sweat A LOT. AKA me. They contain activated charcoal to cleanse and purify the skin while absorbing odor. At the same time, magnesium-rich bentonite clay removes impurities on skin’s surface and plant powders absorb excess moisture. It’s honestly just as effective as any aluminum antiperspirant. And the scent! We can’t finish up this review without talking about the fragrance. The lavender and vanilla is both relaxing and sweet.
