Dark spot serums, brightening serums, vitamin C serums- whatever you want to call them- have been a necessity in my skincare routine since I was a teenager. And I’ve now just come to the realization as I’m writing this that my teenage years were a long time ago. But that is not the point of this post. What I’m trying to say is these type of serums have been crucial to my skin ever since I first started breaking out. I unfortunately have the type of skin where I get a pimple, it goes away relatively quickly, but it then leaves a post-acne red mark behind. I guess you could call it hyperpigmentation. And that is what takes forever to go away. However, I must say that process is rapidly sped up with the help of a dark spot serum.

And the Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Clearing Serum ($85CAD/30ml / $57USD/30ml) is an all-star candidate in that category of serums. Clinique has kept this serum around for as long as I can remember and has thoughtfully improved and reformulated it throughout the years. This is now it’s fourth generation and it’s the best version yet (as you would expect).

Let’s talk about the actual texture and formulation first. Like all of Clinique’s products, it’s 100% fragrance free and safe for sensitive skin. Dermatologists developed and tested this serum, and its lightweight, oil-free texture makes it suitable for all skin types. It sits perfectly underneath any moisturizer and sunscreen without feeling heavy or pilling.

But it’s not just the formula that makes it superior. This Clinique dark spot serum also provides superb results. First and foremost, it targets any dark spots on the skin, including sun spots, age spots, and, most importantly for me, post-acne marks with the help of Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Salicylic Acid, Glucosamine and a very special something called UP302. This UP302 is derived from Dianella Ensifolia, a plant extract. It’s one of Clinique’s proprietary brightening molecule that has powerful antioxidant and brightening benefits. This combination of ingredients ensure the surface of the skin is rapidly (but gently) exfoliated. At the same it’s also hydrated to reveal brighter, more even-looking skin.

In addition, this Clinique Even Better serum is also special because it actually helps prevent future dark spots as well. Ingredients like Glycyrrhetinic Acid (derived from liquorice extract) and Gyokuro (from green tea) help to soothe the skin from environmental irritants that can sometimes trigger future hyperpigmentation on the skin. And there you have it! All the ingredients that make up the wonderful Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Clearing Serum! And before I close out this post, I must do my duty. Like with any Vitamin C serum, you should always wear a sunscreen overtop to protect from any future sun damage.
