Neutrogena Skin Balancing Micellar Wipes review

Summer is officially upon us and I couldn’t be happier. It was a blissful 29°C today. I took two walks outside to celebrate. I always forget how joyful the warm weather and sun makes me. It’s just such a great feeling. But, as the snow turns to sun and the shivers turn to sweat, it reminds me that I need to revamp my skincare routine for the summer. I can finally put away my thick moisturizing creams and reach for something a little lighter, but still hydrating. Neutrogena recently sent me over a couple of their new skincare products and I’ve been busy putting them to the test. Before I jump into my thoughts on them, can we just appreciate how cute the packaging is? I love that Neutrogena is revamping their look. The pastel colours are so eye catching and fun. Good on ya, Neutrogena!

Let’s talk about the Neutrogena Skin Balancing Gel Cleanser ($12.99CAD/$11.99USD) for normal & combination skin first. I love that Neutrogena came up with a cleanser for each skin type. Gone are the days when you would have to subscribe to the notion that one cleanser fits all. In addition to this normal/combination skin cleanser, Neutrogena also launched a moisturizing and soothing milky cleanser for dry and sensitive skin as well as a mattifying and conditioning clay cleanser for oily skin. But this purifying and softening gel cleanser is definitely the one my combination skin needs. It contains 2% polyhydroxy acid (PHA) to gently exfoliate the skin while also respecting the skin’s natural pH. The result is perfectly smooth and soft skin. I found it removed any leftover makeup and excess oil effortlessly and left my skin feeling clean but not stripped.

Next is a product I like to use before I wash my face with a cleanser. I am a huge fan of double cleansing. I will always go in first with micellar water to remove all of my makeup and then I will use a cleanser with my Clarisonic to remove anything I may have missed. I am accustomed to just using micellar water in a bottle with cotton pads however I was very intrigued by this new product from Neutrogena. These are the Skin Balancing Micellar Cleansing Cloths ($10.99CAD/$8.49USD) and they’re actually wipes that are soaked in micellar water instead of your typical makeup remover. They’re infused with vitamin E and pro-vitamin B5 so they’re extremely conditioning and gentle on the skin, promising to leave your face feeling soft and smooth. And, I always like to consider the environmental impacts of any product I use so I was pleased to hear these wipes are 100% plant based and they’re completely compostable. Now if every other makeup wipe company could follow suit, that would be great. However, there’s just one problem with these wipes. Like any other cleansing wipe, I find they are never saturated with enough liquid. They’re just too dry for me and I find that I need like five wipes to even remotely remove some of my makeup. I don’t even wear that much makeup! This package only contains 25 wipes in total so I’m sure you can understand why me using 5 wipes nightly is just not ideal. Plus, when the wipes are this dry, I find they’re a little too scratchy against my skin. So, unfortunately, I would have to pass on these wipes.

But let’s finish up this post with a winner! As I mentioned, I really have to switch up my skincare routine when transitioning from winter to summer and sunscreen is definitely a key player in that. It’s so hard to find a good face sunscreen but I think I’ve found it in this one. This is the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face Mist Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 ($17.49CAD/$12.99USD). It’s a clear spray (making it easy to apply under or over makeup) and uses Helioplex technology to protect against harmful UVA/UVB rays. I love that it’s super lightweight as well as oil-free so it doesn’t break me out. It also is incredibly fast-absorbing and is dry to the touch pretty quickly after you apply it. This is coming everywhere with me this summer.
