I think I’ve reviewed more eyeshadow palettes in the past year than I ever have on ze blog. 2019 has just been the year of damn good eyeshadow palettes. It’s as simple as that. I thought my collection was complete, I really did. I had accepted the fact that I have way too many eyeshadow palettes and I had put myself on a strict no-buy. And yet, here we are, with a brand new palette. However this one was a complete surprise! I recently went on a road trip to the mountains with my friend for Christmas and we did a mini Secret Santa gift giving while we were there. My Secret Santa, Natasha, surprised me with this Violet Voss palette and I couldn’t have been more excited. Receiving makeup as a gift is always so fun because sometimes you receive something that you wouldn’t have bought otherwise! I very rarely buy makeup (because I receive so much in PR) but Violet Voss was always one brand that I desperately wanted to try.
This is the Violet Voss Oh Snap! Gingerbread Fun Sized Mini Eyeshadow Palette ($18USD/$24CAD) and it couldn’t be more gorgeous. It’s a 10-pan palette that contains every shade you could need for holiday makeup looks. I know, I know, Christmas has come and gone by the time this is going up on ze blog but let’s just pretend it’s still the holidays. Plus, who doesn’t want festive makeup all year round? Out of these ten shades, five are matte, three are foils, one is a metallic and one is a satin sheen. That’s an award winning combination right there if you ask me.
When I went to swatch these shadows on my arm for the first, I literally gasped out loud. That’s how you know this is a damn good palette. The matte black shadow was so creamy and buttery and was fully opaque with just one swipe. That’s amazing. And the sparkly foil shadows. Don’t even get me started on those. This is the palette I wish I had of worn on New Year’s because wow, the foils are so shiny and sparkly. It’s like you just rubbed 24 kt gold flakes on your eyelids.
This palette really forced me to go outside of my comfort zone which I loved. It’s a combination of both neutrals and more bold shades and man oh man, are those bold shades BOLD. There’s a gorgeous metallic cherry red as well as a deep red-y burgundy in addition to my more tame, usual shades like the burnt oranges and warm browns. I have been having so much fun playing around with these colors because red shades are one of those things I’ve never quite branched out into until now. Be sure to follow me on instagram to see the makeup looks I create with this palette!
