Blake Brown review

In the time between buying this haircare line and fully testing it out, a lot has happened with Blake Lively. And I’ll admit- I don’t even know the full details of the controversy surrounding her But, to keep this review as unbiased as possible (if that’s even fully possible), I will only be talking about the actual haircare line, my thoughts and results, and skipping over anything to do with the founder of Blake Brown haircare. However, I will say that I’ve always thought Blake Lively has the most gorgeous hair so when I first heard she was developing a hair line, I immediately wanted to try it so maybe I could get hair half as beautiful as hers.

The Blake Brown line is sold exclusively at Target (I picked it up when I visited Vermont a while back) and consists of two collections: the nourishing system and the strengthening system. I decided to go with the Fundamental Strengthening collection as I have long, fine hair that is prone to breakage because it’s on the more delicate side and I was scared the Nourishing products might be a little too heavy for my hair type. Within the Fundamental Strengthening System, we have the Fundamental Strengthening Shampoo ($18.99USD), the Fundamental Strengthening Mask ($19.99USD), and the All-In-Wonder Leave-In Potion ($18.99USD).

I have been using this trio for quite a while now. The mask is completely used up and the shampoo has maybe one or two washes left in the bottle. When I first started using the line, I absolutely loved it. My hair feel silky and soft and full of volume and bounce. But around the halfway mark of using it, my hair started getting oilier super quickly and felt very limp and lifeless if I didn’t take the time to style it. I love wearing my hair with no heat styling quite a bit as it has this nice natural wave to it, but I found these products didn’t mesh well with that. I think the Strengthening Shampoo dried out my scalp to the point that my hair started producing a lot of excess oil to overcompensate the sudden dryness.

And the All-In-Wonder Leave-In Potion wasn’t much better unfortunately. It’s a thicker milky texture so it doesn’t make a lot of sense being in a spray bottle. I would have preferred it to be in a pump or for the formula to be made even thicker and put in a tube. The spray was just messy overall. And I didn’t love the formulation either. I personally don’t understand why heat protectant properties aren’t more common in a product like this. If you’re going to call it an “All-In-Wonder” product, at least make it a heat protectant too. It’s description on the website say it primes hair for styling, yet that doesn’t include heat styling. Make it make sense!!

Okay, enough negativity for one post. Let’s look at the positives of this line. One- I really love the Strengthening Mask. I would mainly use it on the ends and mid lengths of my hair and it made them super silky and shiny. I think the mask would be great used with other shampoos. Two- the scent. This was the main selling point for me. These smell incredible. The Strengthening shampoo and mask have the most amazing Sandalwood Vanille scent with notes of bergamot, sandalwood (duh), and vanilla (double duh), while the nourishing shampoo and mask have the Wild Nectar Santal scent with notes of bergamot, fig, cardamon, and sandalwood. So, so good. But it doesn’t stop there. The All-In-Wonder Leave-In Potion has it’s own separate Bergamot Woods scent of bergamot, pink peppercorn, apricot, and tonka. If every haircare line could smell like this, I would be in heaven.
