I always used to say that blush was my one beauty necessity, meaning if I could only ever wear one beauty product again, it would be blush. But I’ve recently come to the realization that that is not actually true at all. Perfume is the real answer to that question. I’ve been obsessed with fragrances for as long as I can remember- from my preteen years wearing Aquolina’s Pink Sugar to my university days wearing Lancome La Nuit Tresor (review here), to my post-grad days devoted to Kilian Angels Share (review here). And now, we’re entering a new perfume era, this time with Future Society fragrances.
To say that I am obsessed with the Future Society Haunted Rose Eau de Parfum ($98USD) is actually an understatement. Ordering a fragrance online without ever smelling it first is usually a gamble, but as soon as I read the notes, I had a feeling this was me in perfume form. And upon smelling it, I was indeed correct. It has key notes of black pepper & saffron, rose absolute & passionfruit, as well as warm sandalwood & amber. Usually, true floral fragrances are not my thing. I either need it to be a super sweet, candy-floral or something with more depth and smoke. And this Haunted Rose perfume is definitely the latter of the two. It’s warm and smoky and spicy, but then the rose and passionfruit help to lighten it just a touch, giving it a distinctly feminine edge. It’s truly one of the most beautiful fragrances I’ve ever smelled. Future Society even describes it as a floral for people who don’t usually wear florals. And if that doesn’t sum up this fragrance, I don’t know what does.
But it’s not just the actual scents that make Future Society such a cool parfumery. The company actually reimagines extinct flowers through DNA sequencing to create these scents. They’re combining science and biology with beauty in a way that’s never really been done before. And I am all for it. The Haunted Rose EDP is inspired by Macrostylis villosa subspecies 1 + 2, a flower that was once native to South Africa and then lost to invasive species after 1960. It’s now been given new life in the form of this fragrance. Cool, right?
I also got to try one of Future Society’s Body Cleansers in the Solar Canopy scent. The Solar Canopy Gentle Body Cleanser ($28USD) was also formed from the recreation of extinct flowers, this time from the DNA sample of Hibiscadelphus wilderianus, a Hawaiian endemic species that once covered the Southern Slope of Haleakala but was last observed in 1912. It’s more of a fruity floral scent which makes it perfect for the shower. I always love a lighter fragrance in my body care products. It’s top notes are bergamot, red currant, and pink pepper with mid notes of rose, lychee, pistachio, and magnolia and then base notes of vetiver, ambroxan, and pink sugar to sweeten it up just a touch. It’s fruity, bright, and sparkling. The actual body wash formula is really nice as well. It gently cleanses, while keeping the skin moisturized and supple.
Safe to say: these won’t be my last Future Society fragrances.
