I very rarely buy makeup from Sephora, but when I do, I’ve done an immense amount of research on the product and I’m 99% positive I am going to love it. However, that trend stopped with this Milk Makeup Blur + Set Matte Loose Setting Powder ($38CAD/$29USD). Yup, that’s right. I did zero research on this powder before I bought it. You could say I am quite the risk taker. But the real question is did this risk pay off?
Yes and no. I bought this on a whim because I really needed a new loose face powder. I had just run out of the one I had been using for the past year and I surprisingly didn’t have a new one in my makeup collection waiting to be used. This one was on sale for 50% off at Sephora and it looked to be decent. I was always impressed by the Milk Makeup products I had tried in the past so I figured this one was worth the try! Truth be told, if this powder hadn’t been on sale I probably wouldn’t have bought it but I felt like $19 was an okay price to gamble with.
So now that I’ve rambled on and on about the story behind this purchase (are you really surprised), let’s discuss if I actually like this powder. The powder itself is great. I honestly have no complaints. It’s a matte setting powder that keeps my face relatively oil free throughout the day. It’s lightweight and doesn’t feel cakey on the skin. It adds just a hint of coverage to my face (I got it in the shade transparent light). Plus it’s silicone-free, talc-free and contains avocado powder and hyaluronic acid to smooth and hydrate the skin so the powder lays flat without settling into fine lines. Blurring Microspheres also help to blur the look of pores, imperfections, and fine lines while creating a soft-focus, mattified effect. Pretty good, eh?
But, what I do have a complaint about is the packaging. This packaging is atrocious. A few of the reviews on the Sephora website stated that but I chose to ignore them figuring that I would actually like the packaging because it would be mess free unlike the majority of loose powders. After all, ignorance is bliss, right? Wrong. I don’t understand how you are supposed to get any product out of this jar. It has a thin mesh covering over the top. I assume it’s supposed to limit the amount of powder you get on your brush so it’s mess-free but it works a little too well. It is almost impossible to get any of the powder onto your brush or beauty blender.
Whenever I go to use this powder, I have to tip it upside down and smack it on the bottom. I then have to do that repeatedly until I have a few grains of powder ready to swirl my brush in. It’s a hassle. I thought maybe it just wasn’t working for me because I wasn’t using the sponge it came with but that didn’t assist me in getting much powder out either. It shouldn’t be this hard to use a makeup item. I feel like my patience is going to run out soon and I will just cut out of the mesh opening so I can swirl my brush directly in the powder. Sure, it will be a mess but I feel like anything will be easier than this.
Dang, I know I went off on quite the tangent with why I dislike this packaging (again, are you really surprised?) but I still have to admit I do like the actual powder. It works great and sufficiently sets my makeup and mattifies my face. And for that reason, I will continue to use it. I just probably won’t repurchase it.
