COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence Review

I have been wanting to try the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence for the longest time. I feel like it’s constantly being talked about online and has been included in so many beauty influencers’ skincare routines, so I had to test it out to see if it’s appropriately hyped. And is it? First, let’s talk about what the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence ($29CAD/$20.90USD) actually is, because that’s a mouthful to say. To start, it’s categorized as an essence. You apply it after cleansing and toning, but before moisturizer. It’s essentially a serum, but it isn’t as concentrated and doesn’t just target one specific skin concern. Its main goal is to nourish, repair, and plump the skin with moisture.

This essence contains a couple of key ingredients- the first being the most intriguing: Snail Secretion Filtrate. It’s basically snail slime. Fun! Although it might not sound like an ingredient you want to be putting on your skin, this snail extract is responsible for brightening the skin while also hydrating and supporting any skin repair (like a compromised skin barrier for example). In addition, the essence also contains Sodium Hyaluronate which is a form of hyaluronic acid that dramatically boosts skin moisture, as well as Arginine, an amino acid with antioxidant properties that supports elasticity. Sounds pretty great, right? No. Wrong.

So, as you can tell by the key active ingredients, this essence is super hydrating. That’s clearly not the issue. The issue is that I break out like crazy whenever I try to use it. I’m not sure if it’s the snail mucin as I’ve never used a product that contains it before, or if it’s the Sodium Hyaluronate as my skin generally can’t tolerate high percentages of hyaluronic acid anymore. Overall, my skin is just super sensitive, and too much of any ingredient will cause it to break out. It’s a fussy thing, my skin.

So, if you’re looking for major hydration and barrier support, give this COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence a try. But if you have reactive or acne-prone skin, proceed with caution.
